Where Hold To Talk falls short

An honest list — the paid tools earn their price for some people.

English only

The bundled Parakeet TDT 0.6B v2 model transcribes English. If you dictate in other languages, Wispr Flow and Superwhisper support 100+.

Mac only, Apple Silicon only

No Windows, iOS, or Android apps, and no Intel Mac support. The commercial tools cover more platforms.

Dictation only

Hold To Talk types into whatever app you’re using. It doesn’t transcribe audio files or record meetings — Superwhisper does both.

No managed team tier

There’s no admin console or shared dictionaries. Teams deploy via MDM and their own proxy instead — see the enterprise guide.

Why is it free?

No catch — the architecture makes free sustainable.

No servers to pay for

Transcription runs on your Mac. Cloud features connect straight from your machine to your own provider account. There are no Hold To Talk servers, so there’s no per-user cost to pass on.

Open source, Apache 2.0

The code is public and auditable. Subscriptions fund server bills and closed development — Hold To Talk has neither.
